Food for Thought #9

Excerpt from Alan Watts’s – The Tao of Philosophy:

Now it is my contention and my basic metaphysical axiom that existence—the physical universe—is basically playful. There is no necessity for it whatsoever. It is not going anywhere; that is to say, it does not have some destination at which it ought to arrive. It is best understood by analogy with music because music as an art form is essentially playful.

We say, “You play the piano.” You do not work the piano. Why? For instance, music differs from travel because when you travel you are trying to get somewhere and, being a very compulsive and purposive culture, we are busy going everywhere faster and faster in an attempt to eliminate the distance between places.

With modern jet travel you can arrive anywhere almost instantaneously, and what happens as a result is that the two ends of your journey become the same place. So you eliminate the distance and you eliminate the journey, and you forget that the fun of the journey is to travel, not to obliterate travel.

In music, though, one does not make the end of a composition the point of the composition. If that were so, the best conductors would be those who played fastest, and there would be composers who wrote only finales. People would go to a concert just to hear one crashing chord because that is the end. The same is true of dancing because the point of dancing is to dance.

However, we do not understand this because it is not something brought by our education into our everyday conduct. We have a system of schooling which gives a completely different impression. Everything we do is graded, and we put the child into the corridor at one end of this grade system, with a kind of “Come on, kitty-kitty-kitty.” So you go to kindergarten, and that is a great thing, because when you finish that you will get into first grade; then “Come on!” First grade leads to second grade, and so on. When you get out of grade school you go on to high school, and the whole thing is “revving up,” and coming closer.

Then you go on to college, and then by Jove, you get into graduate school, and when you are through with graduate school you go out to join the world. You get into some racket in which you are selling insurance and everyone has their quota to make, and you are going to make it. All the time that great thing is coming and coming, and it is the success you are working toward. Then one day when you wake up, and you are forty years old, you say, “My God, I have arrived! I am there.” However, you do not feel very different from what you always felt, and there is a slight let-down because you feel there was a hoax.

Of course there was a hoax, a dreadful hoax, because they made you miss everything by expectation. People live to retire and they put those savings away, but then when they are sixty-five they do not have any energy left to enjoy it, and they end up in a senior citizens’ community.

We have simply cheated ourselves the whole way down the line. We thought of life by analogy—as a journey or a pilgrimage—which had a serious purpose at the end. The thing was to get to that end, success, or whatever it is, or maybe Heaven after you are dead, but we missed the point along the whole way. It was a musical thing, and you were supposed to sing or dance while the music was being played. Instead you had to do “that thing” and you did not let it happen. So this is why the human being sometimes becomes an organism for self-frustration. ~ Alan Watts

Mental Journey

Expand The Horizon

We all go through a continuous mental journey in our whole lifetime, and as a result of this, we are all at different levels of consciousness, awareness and development at different times. Sometimes, we come across people who may not be able to comprehend what we are saying as they might be at different levels than ours or this can be other way around but that doesn’t mean what we have said can never be heard by those at different levels. You know, sometimes someone just need a little push or a hint, and who knows that can be you. You may think and perceive things in an entirely different way than the way I think and perceive things, and at this moment when you’re reading this you might or might not agree with the words I’m writing here. Mental Journey

I would say this is all okay, we all go through our own mental journey and we learn things in our own ways, sometimes collectively, sometimes individually, sometimes through our experiences, sometimes through other’s experiences.

I’m not here to force my thoughts on anybody or convince anybody. I’m just reflecting what all there is in my mind through words. There is no need to force anything on anyone, it all starts with us, love yourself first and get to know yourself, it’s actually an ever going process to discover ourselves. Feel the air around you as you breath in and out, feel your skin, listen to your heart beat as it pumps up life through your system, pay attention to the thoughts in your head, get out to somewhere to relax and clear your perceptions or thoughts like a walk in the park, sit alone, walk with someone, travel to some place or anything whatever you feel like to do. Feel the life and look after the energy that is flowing through your body, your action and thoughts, look at the energy you’re reflecting, as it affects you first and then others.

When you’re one with yourself and one with your thoughts, only then you can feel connected with yourself from within, and when you’re connected with yourself then let yourself connect with the world, the world outside, you would feel how wonderfully you’re a part of this whole universe. Love yourself, and then extend that love further, further to the surroundings, to the world. We have a world that is to love, a world to be learned, to be discovered, to be explored. Yes! We all go through a continuous mental journey in our lifetime and we can share a part of it with others, I’m sharing it, many have shared it and are sharing and will share.

A Journey into the Wild!

Pic1

These are the few pictures from my recent journey into the serenity of nature. It’s just full of amazement and wonder to explore the places about which we don’t know much till we explored it by our self. I love to tread on the paths which are unknown, which are hidden as the path seems leafy to the eyes.

Pic3

There’s an inexplicable pleasure in spending a moments in the places where you feel your interconnection with the nature. There’s an inexplicable pleasure when one have his favorite music in his ears, and watching the sun going behind the beautiful mountains at the time of sunset. Yes! There’s an inexplicable pleasure in siting on the mountains which are surrounded by the snow clad mountains, and just doing the one thing and that is… feeling the fresh wilds on the face.

Pic4

There’s a magical music in the valley generated by the stream of water flowing down from the hills. As more and more I walk beside this stream, the more I feel the peace within my mind.

Pic5

Let The Stream Flow, Let The River Flow, Let The Music Flow….. were the words in my mind at that moment.

Pic6

My every visit or journey into the wilderness of nature gifts me with some better or new perspectives. It helps me to clear my thoughts, my mind. This part of the world… Yes! This part of world has something which strengthens me from inside.

Pic7

A camp over the hills, blue sky above the head, snow clad mountains all around, and a lot to explore… Yes! There is a lot to explore!!

Well! These are the few pictures from my recent journey into the wild with some of my friends. All the pictures are taken by me, and these all places are in Kullu Valley.

In the end, I would like to write few words of Cheryl Strayed:

“It had nothing to do with gear or footwear or the backpacking fads or philosophies of any particular era or even with getting from point A to point B.
It had to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles with no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental. It seemed to me that it had always felt like this to be a human in the wild, and as long as the wild existed it would always feel this way.”

Phase of Transition

Sometimes most of us go through a phase, the phase of transition in which you change from the old to the new one, the phase of transition because of your awakening, situations, new perspective, or because of some other experiences. In between the transition from the old to the new there is a gap and that gap is called the void. When you are in this void you will feel like a little or more confused and you can’t figure out things clearly. In your journey to cross this void, you create a new person of yourself, the better person than you used to be in the past. Just be honest to yourself in this journey of crossing the void, don’t give up easily and keep moving ahead.
